Wansbeck Homes wins injunction against Ashington couple

An Ashington couple have each been issued with an Anti-social Behaviour Injunction after they allegedly carried out a violent attack on a pregnant woman and her family in the town.

A District Judge, sitting at Morpeth and Berwick County Court granted the injunctions in the absence of Ms Pamela Day ( 19) and Mr Jason Thain (22) of the Rivers Estate, Ashington, after it was alleged that they both violently attacked the pregnant woman, her boyfriend and her father all on the same night.

The incident occurred on the run up to Christmas, after the neighbour had called the police fearing that Ms Day was suffering a domestic violence attack at the hands of Mr Thain.

The following evening, the judge heard, Ms Day, together with Mr Thain confronted the neighbour’s boyfriend as he walked home. He was punched in the face and verbally abused before he found safety in a nearby relative’s home. Later, Day and Thain waited at their neighbour’s address for her to return home. When she appeared, with her father it was alleged that both were verbally abused and threatened before being set upon. The resulting skirmish left the neighbours father suffering from head injuries that required hospital attention.

When a complaint was made to Wansbeck Homes Ltd’s Enforcement Unit, Day and Thain’s landlord, immediate legal action was taken to protect the complainant and her family.

Stewart Sexton, Enforcement Officer, said: "The tenants of Wansbeck Homes should not have to suffer this type of mindless attack from other residents who behave outside of the law. This was a particularly nasty incident and we will use all legal powers available to us to bring the full weight of the law against the people who act in this manner. Thanks to the bravery of the complainants we were able to put measures in place to protect them and to make those responsible think again about their actions.”

The anti-social behaviour injunction prevents Ms Day and Mr Thain from having any further contact with their victims. They are also restricted in their movements around the estate until November 2010.

Wansbeck Homes Ltd took over the management of Wansbeck District Council’s housing stock after a full transfer in February last year.  Anyone wishing to report the tenants of Wansbeck Homes who behave in an anti-social manner are encouraged to do so by telephoning 0844 800 3800 or by email  to enquiries@wansbeckhomes.co.uk
